| The 1987 Daytona 500 marked the end of
free breathing stock cars on the high banks. When the Cup series
returned in 88 restrictor plates were in place to control
horsepower. The move was prompted by an incident at Talladega. Bobby
Allison lost an engine, blew a tire, got airborne and ripped a huge
hole in the catch fence. Spectators were injured. NASCAR took
immediate action. As the series moved forward, SuperSpeedway races
would have new controls in place. Restrictor plates were here
to stay. 1987 was also the last Daytona appearance for a few body styles. Oldsmobile and Pontiac had new sleeker models just on the horizon. Monday the 27th, SimRaceFree will take a trip back in time. Fast back Monte Carlos, Grand Prix 2+2's, Delta 88's and Thunderbirds will all be on the high banks of Daytona to battle with no restrictor plates. it is a trip back in time you won't want to miss.
